I feel the need...

...the need for SPEED!

Today we attended our local hemophilia association's annual meeting. For the last several years, the meeting's been at Hurricane Harbor or at a Rangers game, and usually on the same day as the children's musical performance. That scheduling conflict has kept us from attending lately, but this year we were glad to have the date free. This year's meeting was at Texas Motor Speedway! We're not NASCAR people, but we were still glad to check out the behemoth that's just up the interstate from us.

We spent most of our afternoon at the Speedway Club, which overlooks the track:After our arrival, the kids enjoyed gathering freebies from the vendors. Several drug companies and home health care agencies were there with pens, candy, educational materials and toys. The kids really raked in the goodies!
Then they were off to the children's program downstairs. They talked about hemophilia and spent most of their time making their own race cars. Meanwhile, back in the meeting, we heard what the local chapter was up to and learned how to be better advocates for hemophilia patients. Brett and I also attended a break-out session about infusions and heard from other parents about how venous access is working in their homes. It's always good to share stories with other parents since it's so rare for us to talk to anybody who's familiar with this world of factor, syringes and butterfly needles.

After four hours of being separated from the kids, we were all reunited for the fajita dinner. After the meal, we got to see the kids' race cars:

The kids also got their first good look at the track below us:
At long last, that part of our day was over! We stopped for a quick self-portrait in the marble on our way out before heading to the track.
Then we were off to the races (or the pace cars, at least):

WOW, was that cool! We made two laps around the oval at 100 mph, stopping once to feel the steep bank of the first turn. It was over before we could blink, but it was an awesome experience!

Lunch date.

Today I took Ryan and Katie shopping for camp stuff. They both leave for Camp Impact Sunday afternoon, so I used that as a good excuse to get them new shorts and socks and such. After we blazed through Target, I took them to Cheddar's for lunch.

Now THIS is what summer's all about: being able to take my kids to lunch on a weekday! There was something so casual, so NICE about sitting down at a real restaurant (sans play area), just the three of us enjoying a great meal. (Not that we didn't miss Dad--it's just a different dynamic.) We laughed, I cried... It was wonderful.

Both kids were extra-polite to our waitress and perfect dinner companions, too. Our waitress even commented on what great kids they are. I already KNEW how great they are, but it's lunches like this one that really let me revel in that knowledge!

PZ at Six Flags.

The Power Zone kids took over Six Flags on Tuesday! We all had a great time in spite of the muggy weather.

Brain freeze!

T-shirt Tuesday.

T-shirt Tribute #14
I'm breaking my own rule: This week I'm posting a T-shirt that I'm keeping! But in honor of our anniversary yesterday, I figured this shirt was appropriate.

We had the most fun with Elvis in Vegas for our 10th anniversary. It was especially cool to renew our vows on our actual anniversary. That renewal ceremony was three years ago, but we still remember our Elvis and our awkward dance moves! Tons o' fun!

Lucky 13.

Thirteen years ago today, Brett made me the luckiest woman in the world. Then, on our 10th anniversary, we renewed our vows with "Elvis" in Las Vegas!
Both ceremonies were just right for us. I didn't want over-the-top fancy; I didn't need a bunch of frills. What I did want and need was the perfect groom, and I got him--twice!

For the record, I still love my wedding dress (if not my veil). Katie loves it, too--or, at least, she loved it when she was 3 1/2 and I let her try it on! (Yes, that's a Dorothy costume under the wedding dress. We were going through a Wizard of Oz phase then!)

Happy anniversary, Baby! I love you, Shgee!

Happy Dad's Day!

Before church Ryan and Katie gave Brett his Father's Day cards, and he was delighted to read their sweet notes and see their cool illustrations.

After church we met up with Brett's family at Cotton Belt BBQ, where we honored Papa with a big Dad's Day lunch. Brett's Aunt Oma was in town, so it was great to get to see her!

Here Papa's opening his gifts: FOOD!!!
The kids enjoyed dining with their cousin Adam:
And we all were glad that Chris is still in town:(Wish you could've been here, Huggie! Miss you!)

Another entry for the "It's a small world" category: Brett's friend Johnnie and his family also met at Cotton Belt for lunch, so we got to see his crew, including 3-month-old Logan!
Hope you enjoyed your day, Dad! We love you!

The big 3-0.

I'm far from being 30 years old, but as of this morning's weigh-in, I have lost 30 pounds! YIPPEE!!!! My goal was to lose 20 by graduation, and I lost 24 by that date (May 26). Then my weight loss went into slow motion. I really hit a plateau. I've still been losing pounds, but oh, it's been much slower, much, much harder.

So today I've FINALLY reached another milestone, and the challenge is to stay the course so I can meet my next short-term goal: to have lost 45 pounds by Sept. 1, the first UT football game. That's only 76 days away. Fifteen more pounds in 76 days? Yikes! But if I can pull that off, I'll have just 30 pounds to go to hit my goal weight. And then the true challenge--to stick with this PERMANENT lifestyle change--will begin.

My fear of failure has kept me from blogging about this (in spite of my weight loss ticker at the bottom of the page), but I'm to the point where I need to go public. I can do this, and for the sake of myself and my family, I WILL DO THIS.

And how nice that I'm not going it alone. Brett has been wonderfully supportive, quick to offer a walk around the block or to cook a low-carb meal. Ryan and Katie, too, have encouraged me with big hugs and sweet words. I need every bit of encouragement I can get because there's nothing like the siren song of Nacho Cheese Doritos or McDonalds french fries!

Friday family fun.

Friday nights have long been our family nights. We'll grab a bite; we'll watch a movie together. But this Friday we hit Six Flags. It was great! We found short lines, less-than-blazing temperatures, Brett's cousin from Marshall, and a martian named Marvin.

While in Gotham City, we were stunned to run into Rick and Kristen, Brett's cousin and cousin-in-law from Marshall! It was great to see them, catch up a little, and see how big their son Ben is getting. We also got to meet Kristen's stepbrother and nephew. What a pleasant surprise!

Our one near-disappointment came around 8:15. We had saved the Titan--our all-time favorite ride--for later in our visit, but when we walked over there, discovered it had closed at 7 p.m. because of a gala in the picnic pavilions. (VIPs were celebrating Saturday's Coobrila premiere.) Anyway, we were bummed, but we talked about how we'll just have to ride it extra times on our next visit. Well, four turns on the Conquistador later, Ryan and Katie notice the Titan's running again. We head over there to discover that yes, it's running, and NOBODY'S in line! We rode it five times in a row! By then it was dark, and nothing compares to riding a roller coaster after dark!

Hello and goodbye...and HELLO?!

Finally! School's been out since May 25, but today was my first "day off." Between computer classes and family gatherings, music camp and SAT class, I've been working every day! So today was my first day of stay-in-my-PJs, lounge-around-the-house summer vacation, and it came just in the nick of time. I finally got to see The Price Is Right! Don't ask me why I love that show. Maybe it reminds me of all the game shows I watched when I was little. Maybe it's just kitschy enough for me. In any case, it's just not summer break unless I can watch The Price Is Right!

How sad that my first chance to watch TPIR this summer was Bob's last episode!
Thanks for the memories, Bob! And yes, we're working on getting our pets spayed and neutered.

We'd better or else more of this will happen:

The tournament begins...

Our nephew Chris is home from grad school for a few weeks, so he and Brett are in the midst of a video game tournament. Current standings: Brett 2, Chris 2.

Chris challenged Brett to this test of skills last week: Chris's blog

While Chris is home from Massachusetts, he and Brett will continue their tournament. Still on tap: NBA Street and a game of Chris's choosing. Should be fun!

T-shirt Tuesday.

T-shirt Tribute #13
Once upon a time, there was a little blonde girl who journeyed into a brand new place: Soccerland. When she donned her cleats, shinguards, and red and white jersey, she magically transformed into a Ladybug. And what a Ladybug she was! She could kick her strong ladybug legs and she could spread her wings to fly across the field. Her Ladybug coach was a nice man, but at the end of the season, he had to move away. And some of the moms (not this one) couldn't figure out how to play nicely. So all of the little Ladybugs had to fly away home.

The next year, our Ladybug traded her red jersey for a purple one. This time when she put on the cleats and shinguards, she was a Cheetah Girl. No longer just an insect, now she was a Disney Channel character! She and the other Cheetah Girls were the "fast cats," and they all transformed into one big purple blur when each game began. These purple Cheetahs had an amazing coach who was so encouraging and gentle with them. And even the grown-ups seemed to get along! All was well within Soccerland.

But our Cheetah Girl was not content with the white ball that ruled that land. She was entranced with another ball, an orange one that bounced high. She longed to use her hands to shoot that ball, to hear the SWISH of it through a net. The soccer season ended and we said our goodbyes to the other Cheetah Girls. Our Cheetah was moving on -- onward and Upward to basketball.

We sometimes recall our days in Soccerland. In spite of our bleacher time in the blazing heat or freezing wind, we have mostly fond memories of those Saturdays at Green Valley. Our Ladybug/Cheetah Girl had much fun, scoring goals or blocking them. But when we're inside the cozy RHCC gym on an icy winter afternoon, we're thinking Basketball Land's not so bad after all.

And the little blonde girl? She played happily ever after.

Nic and Nebbie

I'm just too proud of Ryan and Katie! They both were excellent in the children's musical (as were all the campers)! Everybody--kids and adults--worked so hard, and it really paid off.

These photos are posted on the Music Camp blog, but I just had to post them here, too. Thanks to Mary and Clark for taking these! AWESOME photography!

My superstars!

I've posted TONS of pictures on the Music Camp blog, but I just have to post these shots of my favorite stars!

Our Nebbie:

And Nicodemus (with his Mom, the bloggin' fool):

And both Ryan and Katie with our dear friend, Mrs. Giddings. We got to see her when the cast performed at her retirement community on Wednesday!

Tonight's show was spectacular! We have one performance left at 5 p.m. Sunday. Don't miss it!

You can't judge a book by its cover...

...so you ought to buy yourself a copy!

We've seen the proofs; now we've seen the cover. Can you tell we're excited?

He oughta be in pictures.

Casper's famous! His picture is on the NBC5 website. Actually, he's in two pictures: slides 10 and 11 of the "Dog Days of Summer" slideshow. (Yes, we realize Casper is not a dog! But isn't he cute?)
The weather folks will show some of these pictures occasionally, so if you happen to be watching channel 5 news, you might see our Casper!

T-shirt Tuesday.

T-shirt Tribute #12

Since this is music camp week, I just had to post this T-shirt! My favorite part of Holy Moses? The plague song with flies, hail and other objects glued to giant styrofoam numbers. Great stuff!

The rainbow connection.

Another day, another thunderstorm! Monday's storm was short-lived, but its timing made for some gorgeous rainbows!

Busy, busy.

It's Music Camp week! Three of us Dubs will be working hard and playing harder as we help put on this year's musical, Nic at Night.

I may post a few shots later in the week, but for now details and photos are on our Music Camp blog.

Beat the rush.

Since it hasn't actually been published yet, it's only available for pre-order, and the Amazon site doesn't include much detail. For details, you have to check out this site:

All of this makes us even more anxious to see the book in print!
